Valentine's Day in China

Chinese Valentine's Day is on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. The love story for this day is about the 7th daughter of Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. The Emperor did not agree with their relationship and so he separated them. The 7th daughter was forced to move to the star Vega and the cowherd moved to the star Altair. They are allowed to meet only once a year on the day of 7th day of 7th lunar month. The 7th daughter of Emperor was good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothing, so she was called a Weaving Maid. The Emperor liked her skills at weaving clouds and rainbows to beautify the world.

Avocado is a superfood!

Did you know that an avocado is a superfood?

Avocados have a long list of potential health benefits and are one of the safest fruits you can buy conventionally-grown, ie: most experts do not believe you need to purchase organic ones. They're very low in fructose and provide close to 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including fiber, potassium (more thanb twice the amount found in a banana!), Vitamin E, B Vitamins and Folic Acid.

Berries reduce heart attack risk

Here's an article which talks about the benefits of certain fruits – especially strawberries and blueberries, which can reduce the risk of heart attack in women by 32% if eaten 3 times or more per week! The article also cautions us, however, about the type and amount of fruit we eat due to sugar and fructose content - if consumed in excess they can be damaging to our health.

Why is acupuncture point LI11 used?

Ever wondered why your acupuncturist uses a point at your elbow crease? It’s called LI11 – Large Intestine 11 – Quchi (which translates as Pool at the Crook) and is a very important point in acupuncture due to its wide range of indications. It’s best known for cooling heat, ie: for sore throat, rashes, excessive thirst and is often used for shoulder pain, tennis elbow, arthritis in the elbow, etc. You can put pressure on it yourself to help prevent colds and flu. Here’s more from Sara Calabro:

Christmas ("Sheng Dan") in China

Christmas in China is called Sheng Dan. It is not a national holiday but, even though it is a Christian tradition, many people in China celebrate Christmas by decorating their houses with Christmas trees, shopping for presents, spending time with family and friends and by eating special foods. It is viewed as a wonderful Western cultural tradition, but they do have their own Christmas tradition which is to eat an apple on Christmas Eve to ensure good luck the following year! Here are a few “Christmassy” pictures.. It is viewed as a wonderful Western cultural tradition. In China they have their own Christmas tradition which is to eat an apple on Christmas Eve to ensure good luck for the following year!

Yawning may cool your brain!

Yawning doesn’t necessarily mean that you are tired or bored or are just being sympathetic to another person yawning. Studies are suggesting that the cool air you inhale helps to regulate your brain temperature and this is probably why humans yawn more in winter than in summer!

"Brains are like computers... They operate most efficiently when cool, and physical adaptations have evolved to allow maximum cooling of the brain."

New study links excess iron with Alzeimer's disease

There are tips in this article on how to avoid excess iron which can be very harmful to our bodies.

“...High iron levels in your blood can lead to the production of free radicals that can damage neurons in your brain…… Experts on metal metabolism in the body said the research highlights the role of metal ions in the development of Alzheimer's, as excess iron accumulation in the brain is a consistent observation in Alzheimer's disease…. Iron is also known to accumulate specifically in brain regions associated with memory and thought processes, which are gradually lost as Alzheimer's progresses. At this time it's not entirely clear whether the excess iron is the result of external sources, such as supplements or metal pans, or due to a genetic predisposition to absorbing too much iron or biochemical changes that cause an imbalance internally -- likely it's a combination of factors….”

Note: copper, aluminium & zinc are also similarly linked to Alzeimer’s Disease.

Here’s an excellent article about the dangers of overhydrating –a common and highly dangerous problem with endurance athletes and something for those who do not run or participate in endurance exercise to be aware of too.. Overhydration can, in fact, worsen athletic performance. It’s wise to follow this advice from the article:

“……….We have a 300 million year developed system that tells you with exquisite accuracy how much you need to drink and when you need to drink. It’s called thirst. If you rely on thirst you won’t ever become dehydrated, and you won’t also ever become overhydrated.”
