 | | | | "I went to Maria to receive acupuncture for treatment of migraines which I was having frequently at the time. My symptoms were tingling in one of my arms, nausea, facial pain and sudden changes in mood. Maria is very professional and makes you feel at ease. She takes time to learn about you, your lifestyle and your condition and then plans treatments accordingly. I found the treatments really helped reduce the frequency of my migraines and always felt more energetic after my appointment. I would recommend Maria to friends/family." Anita | |
| What a Treatment Entails | The practitioner will begin the initial acupuncture treatment by asking the patient certain questions which will assist in making a diagnosis, even if a diagnosis has already been made according to conventional medicine. The reason for this is that the acupuncturist follows the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), according to which the body is seen as a whole and the root cause of the disorder is treated in addition to the symptoms.
The questions the patient is asked relate to the condition itself (i.e., its onset, severity, whether acute or chronic, symptoms experienced, if anything makes it worse or improves it, if medication is being taken for it, etc.) as well as questions regarding general health, energy, appetite, diet, lifestyle, sleep, family history and previous medical history.
| | | | | | The acupuncturist will also look at the patient’s tongue and will check their pulse. The tongue and pulse also provide information regarding the nature of the disorder, the state of the internal organs and the state of the body’s Qi (vital energy).
Once a TCM diagnosis has been made, the practitioner will decide a treatment plan. Acupuncture points from appropriate Channels will be selected to treat the areas of blockage identified in the body as a whole. These points may be in the area affected (“local” points) or further away from the affected area (“distal” points).
The patient may experience a mild, tingling sensation or warm sensation when a feeling known as ”deqi” is obtained from the very fine acupuncture needles. Once the acupuncture needles are inserted, they are generally retained for 20 to 30 minutes. Other TCM treatments, such as moxibustion or cupping, may be applied or electro-acupuncture may be used. Throughout this time, the patient relaxes comfortably on a special acupuncture couch.
If the treatment is combined with Tuina, the patient generally receives this at the end of the acupuncture treatment. If Tuina is being given as a treatment on its own, however, the same consultation and diagnosis procedure is followed.
The benefit of a treatment may be experienced immediately or shortly after the treatment. Each patient and each condition responds differently to acupunctur; for example, chronic conditions generally take longer to benefit long-term from acupuncture than acute conditions. Therefore, subsequent treatments are usually recommended. | | | | | | | |
