About AcuWell

AcuWell came about from the personal experience with ill health of its founder, Maria Maher.

Maria first became interested in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine after she underwent treatment for cancer following surgery to remove a brain tumour. Acupuncture helped her overcome the negative side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy then, and now continues to help her maintain good health. Maria went on to complete  post-graduate training in the treatment of cancer using acupuncture and now holds a Certificate in Oncology Acupuncture.

At the time of her illness Maria already had a successful career in international business with exporting companies in the IT industry. However, it was this life-changing experience that gave her the desire to change career completely and to help improve the health and quality of life of others.

Maria had experienced many therapies which complemented conventional medicine. However, of these, it was acupuncture, and it forming part of an ancient, proven holistic healthcare system, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, that particularly resonated with her.

Maria studied at the Acupuncture Foundation of Ireland under Dr. Jin Huide and Dr. Wu Jidong, both of whom are Professors of the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China. After graduating, she gained clinical experience under Professor Qiu Xian Ling in the 1st Affiliated Hospital in Nanjing, China. She subsequently obtained a Diploma in Tuina (Chinese Deep Tissue Massage) under Dr. Fanyi Meng of Lincoln University, England. Maria is completed  a course and holds a Diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine from the Acupuncture Foundation of Ireland. She is currently a Board member of the Irish Register for Chinese Medical Herbalists (IRCMH).

Maria continually updates her skills by completing postgraduate courses and has a special interest in Fertility Acupuncture and acupuncture for pregnancy. She has a Diploma with Distinction in TCM Gynaecology and Obstetrics – Acupuncture, awarded by Dr. Trevor Wing of The Woman’s Natural Health Practice, and is a founding member of the Zita West affiliated acupuncturist network for reproductive health, which was established in Ireland in 2009. Maria is also a founding member of Acupuncture for Fertility & Pregnancy Ireland (formerly A.C.T. Dublin). She has also completed postgraduate training with other UK-based experts in the areas of fertility, pregnancy and obstetrics, notably, with Jani White of Nature Child, renowned midwife and acupuncturist Sarah Budd  as well as with Debra Betts midwife, acupuncturist, international lecturer and author based in New Zealand.

Maria practises different styles of acupuncture, including Master Tung Acupuncture and Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, as well as traditional Chinese acupuncture.

“I know, first-hand, what the benefits of acupuncture are. In fact, it is the reason I am an acupuncturist today! The first time I had it was when I was diagnosed with brain cancer (that dreaded “C word”). I had to have 30 sessions of radiotherapy and four months of chemotherapy and suffered from nausea, headaches, low energy and sometimes low spirits. A course of acupuncture helped change that. I felt so much better after each acupuncture treatment – headache gone, nausea gone, and I felt better mentally too. It really helped me get through the long journey that illness brings and on my road to recovery. It has also helped relieve my lower back pain any time I get back pain (from tennis!). The experience convinced me to practise acupuncture full time and help others get through whatever health issue they have. I hope you will give it a try. I’d love to help you.” – Maria Maher, AcuWell
